Acne: The Most Common Skin Problem
by Beau Kowan

No one likes acne. Names like "crater face" and "pizza face"
have haunted more than just a few people. Yet acne is a
common problem.

Affecting more than 80% of people at some time in their
lives, acne most frequently strikes during the teenage years
but can affect people of all ages and continue throughout
adulthood. And while it is generally a facial problem, acne
can occur anywhere on the body. The shoulders, back, and
chest are also frequently affected.

Acne can sometimes be very painful and it can also leave
scars. The scarring is a common problem for many people.
When they finally get over the trauma of the acne, they may
be left not with beautiful and clear skin but with scars.

What Causes Acne?

What causes skin breakouts? Over the years many mistaken
ideas have caused a lot of misunderstanding. For example,
for years chocolate was thought to be a culprit. The truth
is that acne is more often caused by hormonal changes and
excess oil in the skin.

Hormones known as "androgens" help skin produce necessary
oils. When the androgens are out of balance too much oil
results which can trap dirt in the pores, leading to pimples
and blackheads. Too much oil in the hair can also be a
problem if the hair is long enough to touch the face.

There are other things that can help contribute to acne such
as heredity but these are the main ones. You should try to
keep your face as clean as possible. Always wash off your
makeup and clean your face after sweating.

Treating and Preventing Acne

A wide variety of treatments is available today, both by
prescription and over-the-counter. If you've tried the
retail treatments without effect, it's important to see a
doctor so that you won't suffer needlessly.

There are also many homeopathic or "natural" remedies, and
some of them can be concocted at home from simple, natural
ingredients. Prevention, of course, is preferable to any
kind of treatment. Even if you are unable to prevent all
breakouts, you may be able to cut down the occurrences
signifiantly.

If you have experienced severe acne outbreaks you are at
risk for permanent scarring. Even if you are unable to
prevent breakouts completely, reducing the number and
frequency of eruptions can significantly reduce your risk of
scarring.
